Alternatives after the closure of Google News

As stated in the new intellectual property law (LPI), a law that will come into force in January, search engines, and in this case Google, must pay the media for the use of content on the Internet. The search engine's refusal to pay said media has transformed into the closure of the Google News service since early last Tuesday.

From that moment on, when users want to access Google News, they are automatically redirected to a page where the reasons are explained and where the company apologizes.

The main victim of this closure is the user, who is the one who wants to continue being informed and no longer has access to the tool they used. Consequently, we wanted to investigate and demonstrate that there is life after Google News. Here are some alternatives:

1. RSS readers or Feeds

For all those who follow many media outlets, it is a good option. Many news pages offer this service to follow current events. The user only has to add the sources they want to follow and enter their "feeds" (each of these "feeds" consists of a title, a summary and a link to the website of origin or to the one containing the full text).

By connecting through a social network we can use Feedly, a free service both via the web and in applications for mobile devices. On the other hand, we have the Pushbullet option, a notification service with a notification option every time new news comes out.

2. Content aggregators

Yahoo! News, recently redesigned, is the most complete alternative. The problem is that it is in a similar situation to that of Google since it is also affected by the new LPI, although its role is still unclear.

Bing News is another alternative with a similar profile but is not as extensive as Yahoo!. The neatness of its design and the clarity in its hierarchy in different sections are the two aspects that place Bing as one of the main alternatives. In addition, the "Top News" tab makes the information search process faster and easier.

Menéame and Bitácoras are other very popular aggregators. The first is very focused on political issues but also highlights its technology and science section.

3. Applications to discover content according to our interest

If what we want is to be discovered content of interest to us, the ideal application is Flipboard. It allows you to add the media that you want to read but also integrates sections that automatically collect the most relevant information on various topics.

Zite, Prismatic or Pulse are applications that offer services similar to Flipboard.

4. Social networks

Having a good Twitter list, for example, allows us to be well informed about current events and discover curiosities. Millions of links are shared every minute on social networks and on Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus you can follow different users to stay well informed.
