Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) The formal concept of BPD is relatively new in the field of psychopathology. It did not appear in the Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) published by the American Psychiatric Association until 1980 (DSM-III). Once the official category of personality disorder was achieved, interest in this pathology increased. The status was achieved after great controversies and disputes started in the seventies. The official nomenclature and diagnostic criteria were agreed through compromises between the different models and based on empirical-descriptive data.
