SwiftKey has conducted a study to find out which emoticons are used the most in each country, why and for what purpose. This company created a system that helps write faster on smartphones by predicting the words that the user uses the most.
More than 1.000 million messages from different parts of the planet were analyzed, some are surprising and curious but others are already intuitive and only confirm some topics. Spain is the most partying country and the French are the most romantic. However, the United States is not the country of junk food or the country of high rates of violence.
Emoticons with confetti and the Sevillana emoticon are the ones preferred by the Spanish. They are used 72% more than the rest of the countries analyzed. On the other hand, hearts are the most used by the French. They use it in messages four times more than in any corner of the planet.
The romantic line of the French is also followed by the Russians, who are the ones who use the most romantic-themed emoticons. In contrast are the Vietnamese and Australians, who are the least. Being vacations, junk food, alcohol and drugs are their favorites. Additionally, it is worth noting that the use of alcohol emoticons in Vietnam and Australia is double the global average.
The United States tops the list of very diverse emoticons. Women, fire, chicken thigh, homosexual community and technology are the ones they use the most. On the other hand, in Canada violence, gambling and those of an obscene nature are the most common, followed by banana and eggplant.
Those related to bad weather are widely used by Russians and Canadians, while those related to good weather are used a lot by Australians and Arabs. The latter also use the symbols of plants and flowers.
As you have seen, some are very curious and may even miss us. Of course, in almost all languages they are used more positively than negatively. The happiest are the French and the saddest are the Spanish speakers living in the US.
