The origins of the Lean method

The so-called Lean system dates back to the second post-war period thanks to the choice of the leaders of the automobile manufacturer Toyota to introduce a new production method compared to that created by Ford. Going into details, the formula is closely linked to the concept of kaizen, a Japanese expression that has only spread to Europe and America since 1993.

The word in question acquires the meaning of improvement, inherent to business efficiency in all its forms. In the Rising Sun, the term also serves to summarize better management of the resources available to a company, with the perspective of increasing productivity quickly.

What is the Lean methodology?

Lean methodology is simply the ability to achieve greater results with minimal effort. It does not affect the increase in financial resources, but rather facilitates the monitoring of activities without any additional expense. With these premises it is possible to optimize the provision of men and equipment, enhancing business capital.

In this situation it is possible to introduce the concept of lean thinking, which allows us to shape a new business mentality aimed at the well-being of a workforce. In practice, the Lean method is not just a simple set of useful actions to increase productivity, but it goes much further.

In fact, thanks to Lean, it is possible to make the company more competitive and, at the same time, guarantee employees the necessary conditions to operate in the best way. Every cutting-edge business reality should seriously consider a hypothesis of this type, through constructive involvement of staff.

How to apply this system in a business reality

Given what the Lean methodology consists of, it is essential to know how to apply it in a wide-ranging business strategy. In any case, the insertion of this technique must be preceded by some careful evaluations, without which it could be a little less effective.

It begins, first of all, with the definition of the decisive activities to improve the customer experience and invite them to take various actions. Then, we proceed with the Kaizen method, following the policy of small steps and gradual progress. Don't forget to eliminate unnecessary activities.

The situation from which we start must be analyzed in detail, with the perspective of eliminating unnecessary waste. From the management of movements to the control of the necessary processes, from the reduction of goods in stock to the ability to avoid the risk of overproduction, every detail can contribute significantly to a company that wants to grow.

The five S technique

For a perfect implementation of the Lean method, the implementation of the so-called five S technique can in turn make a difference. Here are what these five Japanese terms are and how to get to know their respective characteristics:

  • Seiri, that is to better distinguish what is needed and what is not needed;
  • Seiton, which is putting in order the elements considered essential;
  • Seiso, that is, arranging the workplace in the best possible way from all points of view;
  • Seiketsu, that is, focusing on repetitive methods to improve one's own work system;
  • Shit, that is, making sure one's modus operandi spreads well ingrained.

The tangible benefits of the Lean methodology

Knowing what the Lean methodology is can be fundamental for the destiny of any company. In this case, the company knows in advance the potential needs of customers and has all the necessary resources to satisfy them, without excess production. No more unnecessary documents to accumulate, no goods in stock.

A good company realizes the continuing needs of the public. Each sub-fund of the company can be considered a client for another. The ultimate goal is to produce only what is necessary to increase the company's productivity, in addition to allowing employees and collaborators to operate in perfect conditions.

According to the Lean method, production must be treated in every detail, with a total reduction of any form of waste. Therefore, it is necessary to get to work so that a company can benefit from this system and immediately appreciate its potential.
