The BSI has issued an urgent warning about antivirus.
The Federal Office for Information Security warns against using known antivirus software. Due to the Russian war of aggression, its use is not recommended. Instead, alternatives should be used. The manufacturer denies this.
The BSI recommends that users and businesses refrain from using Kaspersky antivirus software.
In the context of the Russian war in Ukraine, the deployment would represent "a significant risk" that could have "far-reaching consequences" (source: BSI). Kaspersky is based in Russia.
According to German authorities, it cannot be ruled out that the Russian government will force Kaspersky to transmit private data or even attack systems in the future. In particular, the use of this software is not recommended. Users should also look for alternatives to programs like Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security due to the possible "side effects" that are occurring around the world.

The background to the BSI's urgent warning is the recent threats from Russia against NATO and the EU. These are associated with a “considerable risk of a successful IT attack.” Kaspersky products have long been criticized in the US. US authorities have banned their use since 2017.

In a statement, the software manufacturer defends itself against the accusations that are being made. According to the company, there would be no links “with the Russian government or any other.” In addition, Kaspersky highlights that data processing has been carried out in Switzerland since 2018, where it guarantees a maximum of full and absolute security.
