Autonomous cars, drones and delivery robots carry out design tests in Madrid

An autonomous vehicle developed by the University of Nebrija and FEM Expert; a goods delivery drone from Globalvia and eHang; an autonomous last-mile robot for delivering supermarket products to homes from the companies Goggo Network, Glovo and delibera AI, and a foodtruck autonomous Goggo Network, which collects food from restaurants for subsequent sale on public roads, are the first pilot projects that will carry out their tests in the Sandbox of Villaverde Mobility. This Tuesday afternoon, they were presented by the delegate councilor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Ángel Niño, and the councilor for Villaverde Concha Chapa.
Madrid waits create between 3.000 and 5.000 jobs, especially technological, and position itself among the top ten smart cities in the world (Smart cities), generating an investment of more than 300 million euros of large companies and startups in Madrid.
THE LARGEST TESTING SPACE IN EUROPE
El sandbox It is a safe space in which they can test themselves technological innovations in controlled environments and with a real population, before being commercialized or massively implemented.
That of Villaverde, fruit of the public-private partnership between the Madrid City Council and the non-profit association MadridFuturo, it will have an area of 20Km2 and it will be the largest test space in Europe, attracting companies and startups of high technology and innovation to test their projects. Currently, there are only two reference areas with these characteristics, Singapore and California, where autonomous cars are exclusively tested.
BOOST THE INNOVATIVE ECOSYSTEM
Public-private collaboration has led the City Council to approve the mobility ordinance that provides legal coverage for autonomous mobility tests, opening the door to actions in this line, since Future Madrid, through its nearly 100 partner entities and its own team of consultants, to contribute to the design of the ecosystem of the sandbox and identify projects.
Now begins a first phase prior to official implementation, which will be from January 2022. During this initial phase, the City Council will grant specific licenses to test each of the products in a safe environment and for a limited period of time.
